Wormy Ash

The ash tree is a tree that is loved by woodworkers due to the fact that it is a strong and elastic wood. Wormy ash is used for making bows, tool handles, and bats for baseball players, and any other usage that requires a hard wood. Most ash woods are used for things indoor rather than outdoor. If placed outdoors wormy ash wood usually lasts for only five years. The wood is also used for instruments. Guitar bodies are usually made out of ash due to the fact that great tones are produced because of the quality of the wood. Drums shells are another popular use, and even office furniture is made from the wood. Woodworkers love the wood because it stains very easily. Nails and glue are easy to use and do not stop half way in and leave half hanging out. The ash wood also is good in the fireplace.

The ash tree is one that finds its way into mythology fairly well. The Norseman considered the ash tree, the world tree. Snakes of Europe were driven away by the ash leaves. People in Ireland thought that if the shadow of the tree were to shade their crops, then the crops would die. The mythological nature of the tree is also found in English and Greek mythology.

The tree is susceptible to various infections from bugs. One of these is the emerald ash borer. The bore was introduced in the North American continent by accident and since 1998 has killed million of trees. Some people like the wood that has been attacked by the bugs because it gives it a wormy look to it from the paths left by the bugs. This kind of wood is called wormy ash lumber. Wormy ash lumber gives an older look to furniture that is desired by some people. This kind of furniture is called wormy ash furniture. People who work with wormy ash lumber has fined tuned the process of working with the infected wood, right down to the cleaning of the boards from the bugs.

There are a few places that sell wormy ash wood in the North East, and Walker’s sawmill is one of those places. The wood gathered at Walker's Sawmill are from trees that have fallen on their own. They are gathered throughout the Upper Hudson Valley. Over the years John Walker has developed a keen eye for the unusual wood with many natural characteristics that add a beautiful touch to the wood that he mills. That beauty is passed on to the objects made from his milled woods. The artistry of milling wood is accomplished on 100-year-old machines. If ever there was a definition for sustainable wood crafting it is Walker's Sawmill.
