White Oak

White oak lumber makes great white oak furniture. The white oak tree is a tree that lives for a very long time. Some experts have figured that the tree can live up to 800 years old. The white oak tree can be found in many states and in many different areas. White oak trees are all along the eastern sea coast from Maine to Florida. The white oak tree has been seen to grow on ridges, in valleys, and in both dry and wet areas. The white oak tree can grow to 60 to 80 feet tall and have a three to four feet diameter around the truck. The tree itself flowers early on in the season and produces acorns that much of the wildlife love to consume.

Wood workers love the tree for its timber. The lumber from a white oak tree is great for making products such as furniture, kitchen cabinets, flooring material, barrels, and wall strips for baseboards. The wood provides great strength and hardness for a variety of products. The white oak tree is resistant to insects and resists certain fungal attacks due to a chemical called tannin that is found within. Wood workers love to work with the lumber because of its attractive grain markings when it is quarter sawn.

Professionals have even found use for its bark when dried. The bark of the tree can be used for medical purposes. The bark is sometimes used externally for sore throats. White oak has also been used in the past to treat dysentery and other stomach problems. Experts say to always consult doctors before using anything without their consent. Tanners love the bark because that is where the tannin is found that they use for tanning leather items. The acorns that the tree produces are also used in flours and coffee.

There are a few places that sell White Oak in the North East, and some educate people on what to do with it. Walker’s sawmill is one of those places that both knows wood and how to work with it, as well as sell it. The wood gathered at Walker's Sawmill are from trees that have fallen on their own. They are gathered throughout the Upper Hudson Valley. Over the years John Walker has developed a keen eye for the unusual wood with many natural characteristics that add a beautiful touch to the wood that he mills. That beauty is passed on to the objects made from his milled woods. The artistry of milling wood is accomplished on 100-year-old machines. If ever there was a definition for sustainable wood crafting it is Walker's Sawmill.
