The Knotty Eastern White Pine is a large tree that is found in the eastern
regions of North America. The pine is known under several different
names such as White Pine, Eastern White Pine, Northern White Pine, Soft Pine, and Weymouth
Pine. Unlike most trees the Eastern white pine has needles instead of leaves.
Most trees drop seeds in many different ways, the White Pine drops pine
cones that are filled with seeds. After a period of time natural causes
allow the seeds to pop out of the cone and start new trees. Knotty Eastern white pine
trees that are left alone can grow for over 200 to 250 years; there are
a few White pines that have been recorded to live for 400 to 500
years. The Knotty Eastern White Pine tree likes humid climates and some rocky areas to
grow. It covered much of the northeastern parts of North
America, but extensive logging for the past few decades have left only
one percent untouched. The Knotty Eastern white pine is one of the tallest trees in
the eastern states. It is not uncommon for a Knotty Eastern white pine to be 160 feet
tall.
The Knotty Eastern White Pine lumber is valued by woodworkers
because of it strength and fine qualities. The wood works great with
either machine tools or hands tools. The Knotty Eastern White Pine smoothes easily
with a plane and is great for gluing, carving, and staining. When nails
and screws are used, they penetrate the wood with ease. If you are a
person who likes weathered looking wood then you will like this wood.
The Knotty Eastern White Pine, left out in the weather, will turn a light gray.
The
wood of the Knotty Eastern White Pine makes great furniture, window frames, doors, and
even telephone poles. Anyone who has ever worked with the Eastern white pine will comment on the quality of wood that is produced from
this tree. The Knotty Eastern White Pine furniture is good furniture
that accents any room it is found in.
There are a few places that sell Knotty Eastern White Pine wood in the North East, and some
educate people on what to do with it. Walker’s sawmill is one of those
places that both knows wood and how to work with it, as well as sell it.
The wood gathered at Walker's Sawmill are from trees that have fallen on
their own. They are gathered throughout the Upper Hudson Valley. Over
the years John Walker has developed a keen eye for the unusual wood with
many natural characteristics that add a beautiful touch to the wood
that he mills. That beauty is passed on to the objects made from his
milled woods. The artistry of milling wood is accomplished on
100-year-old machines. If ever there was a definition for sustainable
wood crafting it is Walker's Sawmill.
