Black Walnut

From blanket chests to benches, black walnut furniture has become very popular. This sturdy lumber can be nailed or glued together to form everything from doors to floors. The color ranges from darkest to a lighter black and it is a durable wood for nearly all home do-it-your-self projects or commercial applications.

The American black walnut tree provides the wood for black walnut flooring, paneling and all types of furniture. There are roughly 20 species of this type of tree in the world and six are found in the U.S. Black walnut lumber is well known for its straight grain and the grain characteristics that emerge once the wood is cut from the tree. This type of wood generates more figure variant in the beautiful grain than any other wood available.

This beautiful wood enjoys a loyal following from many woodworkers around the country that fashion furniture and other types of home décor out of the unique wood. One reason the woodworkers enjoy working with the black walnut wood is because it performs well with a variety of different tools, both hand and machine. This wood also holds paint and stain exceptionally well.

Once a black walnut piece of furniture is completed, over years of good care, it will develop a lustrous patina. Because the black walnut is the only dark brown domestic type of wood, many people request it for their home or office use. Floor panels are fastened out of the dark wood and will help to bring a room together with a dramatic flare. Another way to come up with a striking balance in a bedroom or office is to have the lighter wood floors and use the dark black walnut as paneling on the walls. Paneling for the walls are making a comeback from the 60's and 70s because this wood is so rich and durable.

The black walnut lumber could be fashioned into furniture, flooring, window trim or baseboard molding and just about anything other woods can be used in. For woodworkers, it is a workable style wood with no problems and will fit most commercial or residential applications.

There are a few places that sell black walnut wood in the North East, and Walker’s sawmill is one of those places. The wood gathered at Walker's Sawmill are from trees that have fallen on their own. They are gathered throughout the Upper Hudson Valley. Over the years John Walker has developed a keen eye for the unusual wood with many natural characteristics that add a beautiful touch to the wood that he mills. That beauty is passed on to the objects made from his milled woods. The artistry of milling wood is accomplished on 100-year-old machines. If ever there was a definition for sustainable wood crafting it is Walker's Sawmill.
